Description
SERVICE CATEGORY: Request for Repair / Roadway Hazard SPECIFIC ISSUE: Dislodged Utility Manhole Cover (Eversource)LOCATION: Intersection of Columbia Road, Dudley Street, and Stoughton Street (Columbia Road & Dudley Street approaches) PRIORITY LEVEL: EMERGENCY ESCALATION / IMMEDIATE PUBLIC SAFETY RIS EMERGENCY CIVIC ESCALATION This is a formal public safety report submitted to document a severe and ongoing roadway infrastructure failure at the intersection of Columbia Road, Dudley Street, and Stoughton Street. Photographically documented evidence confirms that a heavy cast-iron utility manhole cover owned and operated by Eversource Energy has been violently unseated from its rim assembly and left completely ajar. This structural displacement occurred directly from routine vehicular traffic striking the loose casting.Eversource Energy has consistently relied on superficial, temporary patches that fail within days. This continued neglect places the entire Uphams Corner community in severe physical danger. We have a tragic historical precedent for this specific type of infrastructure failure: in New York, a woman was killed after a failing manhole cover collapsed, causing her to fall directly into a subterranean utility vault. We refuse to wait for a preventable catastrophe of that scale to occur here, nor should we wait for a personal vehicle to hit this open crater, causing catastrophic property damage or severe physical injuries to its occupants. The compounding danger to critical emergency infrastructure must be addressed immediately:Boston Fire Department Engine 21, the absolute busiest fire station in the city of Boston, regularly traverses this precise manhole cover during emergency calls. If an apparatus strikes this unseated plate on a priority run, a multi-ton fire engine could become catastrophically jammed, freezing critical emergency responses.Boston EMS Units traverse this exact location hundreds of times every single day, utilizing this intersection as a primary pipeline while responding to emergencies and ferrying injured or sick patients directly to Boston Medical Center. Forcing responding ambulances to maneuver around or strike an unstable street opening while providing critical life-saving care is completely unconscionable. This infrastructure neglect carries an intense, unacceptable personal toll. My 89-year-old mother is forced to walk across this exact crosswalk location regularly. The safety of our elderly relatives, neighborhood children, students, and vulnerable citizens cannot be continually compromised by corporate indifference. We demand that the City of Boston enforce immediate, permanent engineering remediation to anchor this utility assembly securely into the sub-base of the roadway intersection.
