Resolved. The tree in question currently meets the City of Boston pruning specifications and does not require extra pruning at this time. Sidewalk makesafe cases can be made to public works. All public street trees in the City of Boston are protected by state law (MGL CH 87). For the BPRD Urban Forestry Division to remove a live and healthy public street tree for the reason given, we need proof of the roots damaging the pipes. Proof shall include pictures of the roots growing through and damaging the pipes and written documentation from a licensed plumber stating that the tree must be removed in order for the repairs to be completed. Until then the tree will not be removed. As the property owner you may also cut any of the trees roots back to your property line in order to prevent this damage in the future. Proof of the damage can be sent to Boston Parks & Recreation Department 3rd floor, 1010 Massachusetts Ave Boston, MA 02118 Attn: Urban Forestry Division or emailed to TREES@Boston.gov.
